‘He stabbed up to 36 times’
Femicide is celebrated globally today during International Day against Violence against Women. An important subject, according to broadcaster BNNVARA, because every eight days a woman is murdered in the Netherlands.
The (former) partner is almost always the perpetrator and the woman’s choice to be independent is the cause. “Femicide is often referred to in the media as a family or family drama, but it is not,” says BNNVARA, which is a documentary about women’s murders on the air.
Relatives of women candid
“It is murder of women standing up for themselves. Why is femicide so underexposed? Why is the animal not called by its name? And why are we judged well for the man in the bushes when the greatest danger to women is sitting next to them on the couch?” 2Doc: Femicidethat is the documentary, can be seen on Saturday December 10 at 10:05 pm at BNNVARA on NPO 2.
In this document, relatives of femicide victims candidly and penetratingly share their story. Not only the circumstances, the murder itself and the drama that is discussed, but also the taboo attached to the name: femicide, murder of women because they are women.
Big problem in the Netherlands
Roxanne Herder and Eva Strating are the directors of 2Doc: Femicide. They say: “We think that this film had to be made to bring femicide to the attention of the Netherlands. It is dismissed as family drama but it is not. It’s men who don’t guarantee women to choose themselves and kill them for the reason. That is the hard conclusion of a problem that is so much bigger in the Netherlands than we think.”
“He had hidden messages in various places in the house,” says relatives in the trailer, which is limited today. “He went for it with that. Up to 36 times.” They are the voices of Wanda and Jacques Beemsterboer from Hoorn. Their daughter Nadine was killed in December 2006 in Amsterdam by her ex. The Beemsterboer family was also featured in another documentary series this year: Right in the Eyes. That program was about victims who came into contact with perpetrators. On 2Doc: Femicide certainly more relatives of murdered women will participate.
2Doc: Femicide is produced by BNNVARA and dedicated to all victims of murder of women.
