Ecosite, experimentation continues in Siena
The experimentation of the Municipality of Siena continues on the Ecosite in via Fontebranda, the structure inaugurated at the beginning of last October. A modern structure that allows waste to be managed in an area of the historic center and which, in fact, constitutes a valid alternative to the “door to door” method used up to now (and which remains in force anyway). Inside the EcoSite, accessed via SeiCard, as well as an information point, there are containers with controlled access and collectors for other Sei Toscana waste, not involved in the “door to door” scheme: waste oil, batteries, medicines and WEEE.
I data. The data collected so far show that the domestic users who have used the EcoSite are over twenty per cent of those enabled. Furthermore, in the last two weeks there has been a growing trend, a sign that the structure is starting to be known and used. Furthermore, six per cent of the users who have not used the structure up to now are still users of controlled access containers.
“The data – explains councilor Silvia Buzzichelli – of the first weeks are positive and growing, the structure is used and works: it is constantly cleaned, the ventilation and disposal system works perfectly and the space does not create any discomfort. In the area the situation has improved as regards the disposal of bags and, in general, the phenomena of waste abandonment, thanks to the possibility of the double option: the ‘door to door’ and precisely the Ecosito. I would like to remind you that we are talking about a structure that has been in operation for less than two months, given that it was launched last October 3 and that is working on an experimental basis. We will continue with information to citizens and then we will sum up, even if so far the feedback is absolutely positive. I also recall that a property owned a few steps from Piazza del Campo has been recovered and redeveloped”.
The municipal administration has also decided to extend the use of the Ecosite to around thirty non-domestic users who, however, have been assimilated to domestics (small offices and other).
“Among other things – concludes Buzzichelli – I would like to underline that continuing separate waste collection and with total costs that are progressively lowering for the community. In 2018, the economic and financial plan relating to the Tari was 14 million and 901 thousand euros and no reorganization of waste collection had been planned, with separate waste remaining below 40 percent. After two years in which we activated and planned the reorganization of waste collection, with smart bins and the plan for the historic center and therefore the Pef increased, in 2022 the figure is 13 million and 923 thousand euros, therefore lower than the last year of the last mandate. According to the multi-year forecast, this figure will decrease further. These are data and numbers, not chatter, like those of separate waste collection, already over sixty percent. Finally, inside the historic center he reports that the environmental inspectors are carrying out continuous checks: sixteen penalties were imposed in the last days of last week”.
Opening days and hours. The Ecosite works from Monday to Sunday all day: 07.30 – 22.00. To enter the Ecosite, the authorized user (authorized users have received a letter signed by the mayor) must press the button and bring the 6Card close to the display at the entrance door in order to open the door. Once inside, they can confer their waste according to the type. There are four containers for undifferentiated waste, eight for paper and cardboard, eight for multi-material (glass, plastic, aluminum, tetrapak packaging), three for organic waste, one respectively for small WEEE (small waste from electrical and electronic equipment such as mobile phones, telephones, tablets, small monitors, blenders, irons, mice, PC keyboards, etc.), batteries, medicines and vegetable oil (used in the kitchen for preparing and storing food).
220 domestic users can use the structure. Interesting citizens (notified by personalized letter) are those of: Costarella Barbieri, piazza Indipendenza, piazza San Giovanni, piazza Luigi Bonelli, via dei Pellegrini, via delle Campane, via Beccheria, via Diacceto, via di Monna Agnese, vicolo del Bargello, vicolo di San Paolo, vicolo di San Pietro and a part of via delle Terme, via di Città and via di Fontebranda.
