Cracow. An operatic thriller with an all-star cast. “Tosca” at the Krakow Opera
A clash of great passions, ruthless politics, engrossing and heart-rending music – in December, “Tosca” will return to the stage of the Krakow Opera. The main characters of Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece, along with Krakow soloists – Magdalena Barylak, Tomasz Kuk and Adam Szerszeń – will be played by artists performing on a daily basis on international opera stages – Ewa Vesin, Giorgi Sturua and Mikołaj Zalasiński.
One of the most frequently performed operas in the world, which, since its premiere in 1900 at Rome’s Teatro Costanzi, has aroused imagination and emotions. The political intrigue in which the tragic lovers are entangled, the realism and dramatic twists of the action make it similar to a film thriller, co-creating its reflection in the musical structure. To create singer parts, not only provide ways to create vocals, but also apply an effective musical sensitivity that will allow you to show the full multidimensionality of the components.
That’s what “Tosca” is like. On December 9, 10 and 11, the Krakow Opera recalls the classic production of Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece, directed by Laco Adamik and under the musical direction of Andrzej Straszyński, with set design by Barbara Kędzierska.
During the performances on December 9 and 11, the title role of Floria Tosca, who sings in the name of love, is capable of any deed, by the outstanding Polish soprano Ewa Vesin. The artist has already created this role on the stage of the Opéra Orchester national Montpellier and the National Theater in Prague, as well as at the Grand Theater of the National Opera in Warsaw and the Wrocław Opera, and her interpretation met with enthusiasm from critics and an operatic response.
As Tosca’s beloved painter Cavaradossi, she will be partnered by the young Georgian tenor Giorgi Sturua, whose unusual timbre of voice is conquering international stages. The trio of soloist unions is completed by the baritone Mikołaj Zalasiński, used in the Verdi and Verist repertoire. During the sports season at the Krakow Opera as Count di Luna in “Il Trovatore”; now he has returned as the ruthless and demonic police chief Baron Scarpia.
On December 10, soloists well known and loved by the Krakow audience will perform – Magdalena Barylak (Tosca), Tomasz Kuk (Cavaradossi) and Adam Szerszeń (Scarpia). The Opera Orchestra, Choir and Children’s Choir are led by director prof. Piotr Sułkowski.
