Of the FC Red Bull Salzburg enters women’s soccer. This was announced by the Mozart city-dwellers on Thursday in a press release. The “Salzburger Nachrichten” had previously reported on it.
“In a first step”, a U-16 team will start championship operations in cooperation with the women’s first division club FC Bergheim. “The main reasons for starting together with FC Bergheim are that they already have well-functioning structures and several years of experience in the field of women’s football. Bull Salzburg is strengthening,” explained the Salzburg team. Players from the region should serve as the “squad base”.
Freund: The project should grow on a “healthy basis”.
“We chose this path because there are currently not enough players in the state of Salzburg. In this way, we want to lead sustainable talent step by step from the broad spectrum to the top and at the same time let the project grow on a healthy basis. In doing so, we set our philosophy analogous to that of the boys in the Red Bull Football Academy, where we have had outstanding experiences,” added Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund.
From the 2024/25 season, a U-20 team will play in the Future League in cooperation with Bergheim. This could already serve as a “precursor to a combat team”. According to Freund, this is how it is supposed to be successful: “Our goal is not just to be there and to fulfill a duty. No, we also want to develop players in women’s football and be successful in the long term.”
