Lisbon will welcome Christmas with concerts, shows and children’s cinema
church Christmas concerts, shows in several rooms in the city and a children’s movie cycle are part of programming – totally free – of Christmas in Lisbon, organized by the Lisbon City Council and EGEAC, among December 2nd and 18th.
The program was designed for all audiences and includes proposals at various locations across the city, so that everyone can celebrate this festive season.
What will you be able to see
The work Magnificat em Talha Dourada, by the Portuguese composer Eurico Carrapatoso, opens the program, with a concert by Camerata Atlântica and the Youth Choir Camerata Atlântica at the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, on the 2nd, from 9.30 pm.
On the 3rd, also at 21:30, it’s time for Enlace de Natal, a concert by Orquestra Orbis that will take place in the Church of São Vicente de Fora and brings together classic popular compositions, such as Ave Maria by Schubert, in addition to an unpublished piece by composer Pedro Teixeira da Silva.
The Basílica da Estrela is once again the stage for Christmas in Lisbon, after an eight-year gap, to receive The Messiah – considered the reference work of the German composer Friedrich Händel.
It will be a big return, on the 4th, performed by four choral groups: Choral Phydellius, Coral Sinfônico de Portugal, Nova Camerata de Sta. Cecilia and Spatitum Vocale. They will be accompanied by the Alma Mater Orchestra.
The concerts will also pass by the Church of São Roque (with the Gregorian Choir of Lisbon), Church of Our Lady of Help (with the Lisbon Chamber Choir), St George’s Anglican Church (with the Youth Choir of the University of Lisbon and the Chamber Choir of the University of Lisbon), Church of Santo Domingo (with Músicos do Tejo) and Church of São João Baptista do Lumiar (with the New Era Vocal Ensemble).
One of the novelties this year is a cinema cycle, especially dedicated to the youngest, with a selection of Christmas Ribbons from the Disney universe and beyond.
Films will fill the gaps mornings on two weekends of the month at Cinema São Jorge, from 11 am.
To enjoy with the family, taking advantage of the holiday on the 8th, Highlight for two unmissable proposals, also at Cinema São Jorge: The Nutcracker at 4pm with a string quintet to play Tchaikovsky’s melodies; it’s the Voice Project, in the evening, which promises to welcome with a Portuguese pop/rock repertoire, including themes by Luísa Sobral and Tara Perdida, interpreted by a choir of senior voices.
On the 10th, at 21:30, Poema Mundi – 1000 words for peace together, at Cineteatro Capitólio, two formations, the collective Poetry Ensemble and the string quartet Naked Lunch, with four guest voices – the poet Alice Neto de Sousa and the singers Mitó, Xana and Patrícia Relvas – and the musicians of the Afghan Music Community directed by Rui Rebelo.
At the Museum of Lisbon-Palácio Pimenta, the proposal is a journey through time with the Cottas Club Jazz Band that reinterprets the jazz of the 1920s, marking the closing of the exhibition “The Crazy Twenties in Lisbon” on the 10th, at 7 pm.
