Senate facility new rental bike system for Berlin with 10,000 bikes
The rental bike system in Berlin is to be strengthened. The Senate plans to expand the network to up to 10,000 bikes. Especially outside of the S-Bahn ring, stations have been few and far between – one district does not even have a single rental bike.
The Berlin Senate is preparing to introduce a new bicycle rental system in the city. This emerges from the response of the Senate Transport Administration to a request from MP Niklas Schenker (left), which is available to rbb.
Previously on Thursday the “Daily Mirror” [Bezahlinhalt] reported about it. Accordingly, a Europe-wide tender for the redesign is planned for next year.
Outskirts should be better equipped
According to the Senate, there are currently 5,500 rental bikes in the capital. An expansion of the network by 2,000 to 4,500 new bikes was examined, it said. This means that the network can also be improved in the peripheral areas.
So far, most bikes are within the S-Bahn ring, whereas Spandau does not have a single rental bike. The most stations for rental bikes are in Mitte with 175 and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg with 122.

Important building block for the mobility revolution
The expansion would significantly increase the costs of the system, which according to the Senate are largely covered by public management of funds. Nevertheless, the Senate does not rule out a time quota in order to promote cyclical use, for example.
“We would like to launch a largely municipal rental bike system with at least 10,000 bikes and 1,000 stations for Berlin,” said Schenker. This is an important building block for the mobility turnaround, especially for people in the outskirts.
Hamburg as a role model
Schenker named Hamburg as a positive example of a functioning, integrated system, since the first 30 minutes of use are free of charge there and the bikes are operated by the local authority.
In Berlin, the public rental bike system has been operated by Nextbike since 2016.
