PRAGUE

December is inexorably approaching! Do you know the most beautiful places in Prague? They will be even more magical at Christmas

Sugar Mizzy November 24, 2022

Prague even won the poll for the most beautiful city in the world. British magazine Time limit in 2021 he created a survey where 27 thousand respondents voted for the most beautiful city in the world. And our capital surpassed even New York, Paris or Chicago. And what about Prague in the winter months?

The mother of cities is known for its cobbled streets, hidden courtyards, cultural performances, museums and, of course, beer. This is what makes Prague Prague. So what to do in Prague at Christmas? And where to take your significant other?

1. Try ice skating in the historic Old Town

Not only a great meeting, but also a bit of exercise in today’s sedentary lifestyle. There are many ice rinks around Prague in December and it is up to you which one you choose. In addition, the ice rinks are beautifully lit and surrounded by historical buildings of Prague, so they have their own unique atmosphere.

Probably the most famous ice rink is the one in Ovocné trhu. This is a free skating rink that is open 22 hours a day. No problem if you don’t have skates. You can rent them on the spot. Ice rinks can be found, for example, at the Žižkov Tower, Černý Most or on the Letenská Plain.

2. Christmas markets

Christmas in Prague wouldn’t be Christmas without markets. And the markets on the Old Town Square are one of the most beautiful and certainly rival markets in Germany or Austria. No place can compare to them. They are open from December 2nd to January 6th and there is simply no better place to experience the Christmas spirit. Walk through the markets, sing carols, get a welder and buy a trdelnik. What else could you wish for…

If you are scared of the many tourists in the Old Town Square, try the markets at, for example, Prague Castle, Havel Market, Kampa, Republic Square or Peace Square.

3. Go to the Nutcracker ballet

Prague has a long musical history, and when you visit it in December, you cannot miss an evening full of breathtaking orchestras, choirs and dance performances. Try classics such as Swan Lake or the Nutcracker ballet.

Is ballet not your cup of coffee? You will definitely be charmed by yourself National Theatre whose State Opera. It’s worth it just for the experience of seeing the beautiful historic building from inside.

4. Boating

Stop for a moment and take a break from the crowds of people in the streets. Get on the boat and enjoy the beauty of Prague from a completely different perspective. If you’re worried about freezing on the boat, don’t worry, they’re always heated and usually have an on-board bar, so you can even go with a welder. And if you want even more romance, try a boat cruise where they also offer dinner.

5. Breathtaking churches

Prague is called “hundred-spired”, but there will be many more of those churches. They are an integral part of picturesque Prague and every tourist likes to take a photo in front of them. They are incredibly beautiful, and when you step inside, you will be amazed even more.

The most famous is the Church of St. Vitus, and the most beautiful view of it is from Novotné lávky with the Charles Bridge. Other popular churches are, for example, the Church of St. Nicholas in Malá Strana, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Vyšehrad, or the Church of Our Lady of Victory (Prague Jesus Christ). And many others…

Concerts are also held in many of Prague’s historic churches. They take place regularly, for example, in the church of St. Salvatore. There are also seven weekend Advent choir meetings throughout the year Prague Advent choir meeting, where groups from all over the world come together to perform in churches in the Old Town of Prague. All concerts are open to the public and free of charge.

6. Wander around

It’s probably a cliché, but what could be more beautiful than wandering around Christmas Prague and going wherever you want. Get lost in the cobbled streets and enjoy the unique atmosphere of our capital. You will discover places that you didn’t even know about until now.

What about Europe?

Flashing lights, the smell of welders with roasted chestnuts in the city streets can also be found in many other beautiful cities of Europe. Tones of live music mixed with the laughter of visitors create a magical atmosphere of Christmas markets. Where to go for such moments?

Vienna is undoubtedly one of the most popular December destinations ever. And rightfully so. Christmas turns ancient buildings into one of the most beautiful European cities. In addition, Vienna is full of beautiful architecture, world-class museums and nightlife. The atmosphere is definitely magical.

Budapest also deserves attention. The markets on Vörösmarty Square also have a lot going for them. The spa atmosphere is worth a visit. And in addition, this is an ideal opportunity to taste the traditional Hungarian-Jewish flódni cake.

You can definitely find the brightest markets in Brussels, Belgium. Every evening there is a light show and the streets are lined with lights. Brussels is also famous for its waffles and chocolate pralines, which you will definitely find at more than 250 wooden Christmas stands.

They also have magical markets in Poland, namely in Krakow on the Rynek Glówny square. In Poland, these are the biggest and most popular markets ever. The square is decorated with many beautiful medieval buildings, such as the Marian Church, Sukkienice or the Town Hall Tower. Combined with a welder and pirogi, Krakow becomes an irresistible destination.
