Winter weather: The Salzburg winter service is ready for the snow
If winter breaks out in the city of Salzburg in the next few days: the winter service is prepared.
SALZBURG. “Winter can come at any time. We are well prepared,” was the tenor of the municipal building yard team. The building yard has been in “winter service mode” since November 1st.
198 men but only two women on duty
City councilor Anna Schiester is certain: “The work of the building yard employees is indispensable every day of the year.” Two women and 198 men are ready to work on the wintry roads. With 102 vehicles and lots of small equipment, the streets are cleared, sprinkled and tons of snow are taken away by truck.
A total of 450 kilometers of road and over 180 kilometers of footpaths and cycle paths will be cleared of ice and snow. The order is as specified in the RVS (Guidelines and Regulations for Roads): First, trolleybus lines and main roads (federal and state roads) are cleared, then main bicycle routes and then side roads, pedestrian zones, mountain routes (city mountains), footpaths and other bike lanes.
Main cycle paths preferred for the first time
With this year’s winter service, the two main cycle paths along the Salzach (“S1” and “S2”), the cycle path ring around the Stadtberge (“R1”) and the Alterbach cycle path (“R3”) will also be voluntarily preferred as an important commuter route – also like bus lines – freed from snow and ice by the municipal building yard. This makes winter cycling more attractive and safer, according to City Councilor Schiester.
Salt spreading ban with exceptions
2,000 tons of chippings and 1,400 tons of salt are stored for the 2022/23 winter service. “The use of de-icing agents is very precisely regulated in the city’s salt scattering ordinance,” says winter service manager Christian Bleibler.

Sprinkling with brine has proven to be best. In the brine system you can produce 16,000 liters at any time.
Salzburg residents also have obligations
In the time of six to 10 p.m According to the road traffic regulations, owners of properties must ensure safety. Not only the sidewalk in front of one’s own house has to be cleared and grit spread, but also the sidewalk area at bus stops along the property boundary. Streets without sidewalks along the property boundary must be cleared and distributed to a width of one meter. There is no obligation to clear undeveloped agricultural or forestry areas. That The ban on salt spreading also applies to private individuals and property management companies. In extreme weather conditions, however, the magistrate can lift the ban for a limited time.
