The medical world of Toulouse never stops innovating. The latest example comes from Joseph Ducuing Hospital. Since October 2022, Rosa has joined the orthopedic surgery department, directed by Dr Gerard Giordano. But Rosa is not a member of the staff like the others: it is a latest generation robot which assists doctors in fitting knee and hip prostheses.
“Improve the quality of prosthesis fitting”
The doctor from Toulouse details the changes brought about by robotic assistance in such operations:
“Computer-assisted surgery for the fitting of knee and hip prostheses is not a discovery for our team, which has already been using it for more than a decade. The integration of a robot is part of this dynamic of innovation of our establishment and its desire to continue to provide our patients with cutting-edge technological tools, while preserving a practice of sector 1. The digitization of operating theaters and computer-assisted surgery, robotized or not, represents two pillars of my work. Robotic surgery contributes, like navigation, to improving the quality of the fitting of prostheses and, in doing so, the functional results and the duration of the implantations. The robot is an aid for the patient and the caregivers without replace them”.
Each year, the orthopedic surgery department of the Toulouse hospital carries out more than 330 poses of knee and hip prostheses.
