Russia adds its own icebreaker fleet
IA SakhaNews. President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in the protocol of the videoconference, participation in the ceremony of holding a nuclear-powered water icebreaker “Yakutia” and raising the State Flag of the Russian Federation on a nuclear-powered icebreaker “Ural”the Kremlin press service reports.
The new nuclear-powered ships were installed at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg by order of the state corporation Rosatom. They belong to Project 22220, under which a case has been initiated on the largest and largest icebreaking ships in the world, and their main task is circular navigation in the Western Arctic region.
The head of state especially emphasizes that both icebreakers were laid down as part of a large serial project and are part of a large-scale, systematic work to re-equip and fill the domestic icebreaker fleet, on the grounds of Russia’s status as a great Arctic power.
“I note that the first two icebreakers of this series – “Arctic” and “Siberia” – has already taken responsibility, they are already working and doing their job on the most difficult sections and difficult routes, they have confirmed in practice their reliability and efficiency, their highest characteristics.
According to plans, the Ural icebreaker will start performing tasks as early as September next year, and the Yakutia icebreaker should be handed over to the fleet at the end of 2024. Delivery of another icebreaker from the same series – “Chukotka” – expected in 2026. In addition, in 2027 at the shipyard “Star” in the Far East, the construction of a super-powerful nuclear icebreaker was to be completed “Russia” “This is really a super-powerful icebreaker, there are no cases in this world.”
“Ships of such a high ice class are of strategic importance for us. They are necessary for the study and development of the Arctic, for ensuring safety, sustainable shipping in the field of production, and for increasing traffic along the Northern Sea Route.
Again: the development of this vascular corridor allows Russia to more fully reveal its export potential, to establish the construction of logistics routes, including to Southeast Asia. Speaking about the fact that we are open for cooperation with partners, with those who want to work with Russia,” Vladimir Putin said.
“I’m sure that everything is thought out, despite the current complexity, we will definitely put it into practice. To do this, we will increase the capabilities of our nuclear icebreaker fleet, and – which is fundamental – this is necessary through the use of Russian developments and production capacities, using domestic equipment and components .That’s how it actually happens.”
According to the press service of the head of the government of Yakutia, domestic designers have provided for a double draft, which allows icebreakers to work effectively both in the Arctic seas and in shallow areas.
Income for the icebreaker was established by two nuclear reactors. This series uses a new modular nuclear reactor, which is much more powerful than those of the supporters of the 22220 project, as well as a new domestic electric propulsion system.
Yakutians were involved in the construction of the icebreaker from the first day: the chief mechanic of the Baltic Shipyard Stanislav Myasnikov and ship fitter Mikhail Okoneshnikov.
“The launch of a new universal nuclear icebreaker has a great symbolic meaning, this event took place in the year of the 100th anniversary of the founding of our republic. Russia occupies a worthy place in the field of shipbuilding of icebreakers of this class, – commented the head of Yakutia. Aisen Nikolaev.

The total displacement of the icebreaker “Yakutia” is 33.5 thousand square meters. tons. The icebreaker is 173.3 meters deep and 34 meters wide. The ship can reach a speed of 22 seconds in clear water. After being handed over to the customer, the Yakutia icebreaker will be assigned to the port of Murmansk and operate in the Arctic.
“Yakutia” is the fourth (third serial) ship of project 22220. Her laying took place in 2020. After removing the water, the icebreaker will cause inconvenience on the embankment of the Baltic Shipyard.
This shipyard is one of the main shipbuilding enterprises in Russia, it was founded in 1856. The enterprise is part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and specializes in the construction of large ships and vessels. Plant of predicted capacities and suspicious works for a full cycle. In total, more than 600 warships, submarines and light ships have been built here over the more than 160-year history of the Baltic Shipyard.
