Portugal has already used 80% of its swordfish fishing quota, and this catch may soon be closed, warned the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM).
“Considering the data on catches, made by the Portuguese fleet, of the sword species SWO/AN05N (‘stock’ Norte) (‘Xiphias gladius’) in the Atlantic Ocean, north of 5°N, it is informed that the use of the food quota the 80%”, indicates the DGRM in a statement released on its website.
Given this scenario, the DGRM warns that “it may become necessary, in a very short time, to close this fishery”.
Last Wednesday, the DGRM also announced the closure of fishing for bow ray, due to the exhaustion of the quota allocated to Portugal.
“Considering the current level of discharges made by the Portuguese fleet of bow ray (‘Raja undulata’), in Union waters of sub-area 9, it appears that the fishing quota allocated to Portugal has been exhausted”, he said.
“Thus, in compliance with paragraph 2 of article 35 of Regulation (EU) nº 1224/2009, of 20 November, fishing, keeping on board, transhipment and unloading of catches of the aforementioned species is prohibited in the aforementioned zone , from midnight on November 18, 2022,” he added.
The DGRM is a central service of the direct administration of the State, with administrative autonomy, whose objective is the development of security and maritime services, the execution of fisheries policies and preservation of resources.
