Małgorzata Szumowska with the title of Warsaw Woman of the Year 2022
This year’s winner of the plebiscite for the Varsovian of the Year 2022 is an educator, Małgorzata Szumowska, informed the spokeswoman for the capital city hall, Monika Beuth. The statuette was presented to her by the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, during a gala at the Polin Museum of Polish Jews.
As the capital city hall informed, Małgorzata Szumowska, who is an educator and president of the Invisible Education Center Foundation, supports this year’s plebiscite. Szumowska sensitizes, educates and looks at how visually impaired people, of whom there are about 2 million in Poland, look like.
Warszawianka of the Year 2022 is a co-author of the publication “Blind and visually impaired patient in the surgery and in the ward” for ophthalmologists and medical students in Warsaw, and the initiator of the “Access path – share space” and “Run with your head – share space” campaign.

This year, the foundation’s Warszawianka Pokoleń award was also presented to Wanda Traczyk-Stawska – during World War II, an award of the independence underground, a Home Army soldier and participant in the Warsaw Uprising.
“There is strength in each of us, if you want to make it happy, to change this world and get help to become better. Even by helping the weaker, by smiling at the sad. Helpful” – said Traczyk-Stawska.
The Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski, speaking during the gala, said that such moments “are the time when we can finally be optimistic about the future”. “Because each of the nominated ladies shows that it is worth protecting and influencing important matters. This strength that emanates from the nominated women for the title of Warsaw Woman of the Year is extremely accurate for us and means that for now in Warsaw, but that someday also in its entirety “Poland will look proudly into the future and we will focus on making Poland a country where no one will marginalize the verification of problems, and it is obvious that women will strive for their own future and their choices” – he said.
However, the capital city hall, Warszawianka of the Year, is a plebiscite honoring women who carefully or in detail study their activities in a special way to develop and promote Warsaw. This title can be awarded for activities for the benefit of the capital, but also for activities to promote such values as accessibility, tolerance, for outstanding achievements in a given field, activities for women, civil society and the community of the Warsaw community.
