In Monaco, 46 turtles will go to Senegal as part of an environmental program
The story is beautiful and above all positive in these times of suffering for the planet. In 2012, Mali offered to Monaco, on the occasion of an official trip of Prince Albert II, several “spurred” tortoises; the 3rd largest tortoise in the world. These turtles find shelter on the roof terrace of the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco in a specially equipped space. Apparently, they felt very good there because 10 years later, after several spawnings, the enclosure has 49 minors.
Today, these young turtles will make the reverse journey of their parents. Direction Africa but further west, in Senegal. 46 specimens will thus strengthen the Senegalese indigenous populations. They will not be released immediately but will live for a time in a special center in Noflaye. Then they will return to the wild.
