Christmas lights will light up Prague. However, the Advent atmosphere in the metropolis will be frugal

“Despite the difficult situation in the energy market, we want the symbol of Christmas on the Old Town Square to be preserved. We are supporters of sustainability, which is why we chose a tree this year that would otherwise have to be cut down. We don’t choose the nicest, healthy tree in the forest,” said Jan Chabr (TOP 09), Prague councilor for property.

Virtually every city district counts with its own tree. For example, Prague 1 will gradually light up several of them. On the first Advent Sunday, November 27, the tree will start to glow at 5 p.m. in Petrské náměstí and at 6 p.m. in Kozí pláck. In the following days, the tree will light up in Wenceslas Square and other places. In total, Jednička places six trees in this way.
Energy saving lights
However, some districts have decided to save money. “We traditionally have economical decorations in terms of scale, that is, the Christmas tree in front of the office, the decoration of the Nuselská town hall and several streets. All in an economical LED design. This year, due to savings, the lights will be on for a shorter time,” said Prague 4 spokesman Jiří Bigas, adding that 700,000 crowns have been allocated in the budget for Christmas decorations.
In Prague 3, the price will be a little poorer than in the decoration of the year. “Traditionally, four Christmas trees in Žižkov and Vinohrady will be decorated, two office buildings, the main street and Jiřího z Poděbrady Square, where there will be Advent markets – we have a total budget of approximately three quarters of a million. Technologically, it will be completely LED lighting to save energy,” said Pavel Trojan on behalf of the Prague 3 district town hall.

We will use 1.7 million crowns for Christmas in Prague 6. “We organize Christmas decorations on the basis of a framework contract, which includes the installation of light Christmas decorations and their subsequent disposal and storage after the end of Christmas. It also includes ongoing revisions and repairs of Christmas lights, as well as the rental of some decorative elements,” said Jiří Hannich, adding that the price for the service is practically the same from 2020.
The Six will be decorated with 323 light decorations on public lighting poles, 61 pieces of decorative light curtains between masts and light chains on 61 trees.
It will be ready for Advent
In addition to the trees, there will also be LED lighting on public lighting poles. Installation takes place at the request of individual city districts. They are planning it on a similar scale as last year. “We started installing the decorations at the beginning of November. For now, they are ready, for example, in Čakovice near the church of St. Remigius or in Prague 6 in Dejvická Street. We are gradually continuing in other parts of the city so that they can light up during the first Advent weekend and bring the real Christmas atmosphere to Prague,” added the Chairman of the Board of Directors of THMP Tomáš Jílek.
