Return-flying abilities of pigeons have been used on Polish lands – as well as all over the world – since ancient times. The movement of breeding and racing pigeons – in some short-term, but also competitive and sports effects – developed in our lands in the first years of the 20th century.
In 1905, the first association of pigeon breeders. After regaining independence in 1918, there were already a dozen of them. The Ministry of Military Affairs economically and implemented special regulations for the handling of pigeons. These birds were the basic instrument of a strategic nature. In 1939, the Nazi occupier banned Poles from breeding them, destroying almost all our achievements in the field. Failure to comply with the relevant order may result in severe consequences and even the death penalty.
The reconstruction of the breeding, and thus the pigeon movement and the pigeon organization, began right after the war. On April 1, 1946, a nationwide congress of regional racing groups and the association of racing pigeon breeders was held in Krakow. In 1948, in Katowice, the first national exhibition of racing pigeons was organized, in which foreign breeders also participate. We have returned to the international family of homing pigeon breeders.
