Violence against women, the Council of Europe in the next seminar of the University of San Marino together with international partners
San Marino, Afghanistan, Mexico, Africa and beyond: what distinguishes gender-based violence in different cultures, and what are the main differences and similarities? Seeking to answer these questions, the seminar “Gender-based violence in the international context”, scheduled for Thursday 24 November thanks to the organization of the University of the Republic of San Marino as part of the Master’s Degree in Criminology and Forensic Psychiatry, will a global scope with the participation of a series of speakers ready to present case studies, virtuous examples and critical issues that will not overlook the situation currently present on the Titan. The vice president of Grevio, an independent body of the Council of Europe called upon to monitor the application of the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, will in fact take the chair to speak about the positive developments produced in the republic by the promulgation of laws and decrees, without overlooking the concerns due to the duration of the investigations and the gaps in the collection of data on the phenomenon. “The intervention of Simona Lanzoni, together with the innovations represented by the sponsorships of Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and of the Honorary Consulate of Mexico in San Marino, represents a stimulus and a great recognition for a journey that began four years ago with the first seminar dedicated to gender-based violence at our University”, explains the professor Karen Venturini, coordinator of the initiative. “This year – continues the academic – we wanted to broaden the perspective to get to know the phenomenon at an international level. The media and social networks report violence against women every day in realities such as Africa, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Asia. According to ActionAid it is estimated that about 35% of women have suffered violence, sexual or otherwise, at least once. And the figures could be even higher, given the episodes in the shadows because they have not been reported. In 38% of cases of murders of women, the culprit is the partner. Every year in Africa alone there are three million women and girls at risk of female genital mutilation”. Hence the need for a broad and vigilant look at a problem that the UN has defined as a “global scourge”: the one envisaged on the Titan will be a marathon of interventions involving operators, doctors, sociologists and teachers, together with representatives of realities such as the Worldwide Association of Women Forensic Experts, AUSL Romagna, the Differenza Donna Association and the Wanda di Ferdinando Foundation. Between analysis and insights, the seminar will start at 9 in the university headquarters of the former Court, in via Salita alla Rocca 44, in the historic center of San Marino, and will end in the late afternoon with the presentation of the book “Human relations dangerous”. At 18 the volume will be illustrated by Giancarlo Nivoli and Cristiano Depalmas, director and coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Criminology and Forensic Psychiatry at the University of San Marino. Among the sponsors is the General Directorate of Public Administration. The event will take place under the aegis of the Authority for Equal Opportunities, which will take care of one of the scheduled interventions. For information and registration: [email protected].
