Career: Start grants for immigrant teenagers
“Start” supports students with a migration background by providing intensive advice and support on educational issues. In Salzburg, a total of 24 young people will be supported with this scholarship this school year.
SALZBURG. The welcome event for the new “Start” scholarship holders was held in the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce. “Start” is a scholarship for particularly committed students with a migration background.
18-year-old Ukrainian wanted to become a lawyer
One of them is 18-year-old Ukrainian Mariia Karpova. Before the war, the young woman had big plans. “I went to school as normal, spent the weekends with my friends, planned to graduate from high school and then study law. Because as a lawyer, I can help other people in difficult situations,” says Mariia Karpova. Then came the war and the young Ukrainian fled early with her family from her native Donetsk to the capital Kyiv. But because it became more and more unsafe in the capital, Mariia saw no other option and fled to Austria with a family friend in April.
From Kyiv in Lungau
Now she lives in St. Margarethen im Lungau and attends the HLW Multiaugustinum. “All my plans for the future were ruined by the war and the flight. That depressed me.” With the help of a start grant, teenagers with a migration background have the opportunity to continue their education in Austria. “Now I think to myself: new country, new opportunities, what I’ve missed. Living and working in Austria sounds wonderful. But for that I have to learn the language as quickly as possible.”
Get to know companies and training companies
“Start” supports its scholarship holders with intensive advice and support on educational issues, as well as by providing materials such as laptop equipment and a comprehensive educational offer in the form of workshops and tutoring. In addition, “Start” offers the opportunity to establish a network, to get to know companies and training companies, and to develop prospects for the future in Salzburg.
Get the same chances
Youth Councilor Andrea Klambauer supports “Start” Salzburg: “For me, offering young people a future means giving all young people in Salzburg opportunities. Start grants give teenagers with a migration background the support they need to achieve their goals. They will be taken on and supported with their full potential.”
Educational allowance, courses and workshops
“Unfortunately, many young people like Mariia often do not have the financial means to realize their potential,” says Elisabeth Ramp from “Start” Salzburg. “These people receive a monthly education allowance from us and have the opportunity to attend various courses and workshops for their personal development.”
