Lyons. About 200 people gathered to pay tribute to the victims of transphobia
The International Day of “Trans Remembrance” takes place every year on November 20.
About 200 people, members and supporters of the LGBTQIA + community in Lyon (1) gathered at Place de la Comédie, at the foot of the Lyon Opera.
In her speech, a representative of the “Prides in struggle” collective specified that, for the past year, 390 (2) are part of the list of missing around the world: “These are people, our sisters, our brothers, our fellows who have been unjustly taken from us. Every trans person on this list was part of our family and had a life, hopes of loved ones, and leaves people and community they miss. Their memory lives through us and our community’s duty of remembrance.
An increased risk of suicide
The representative of the collective then denounced the decisions, according to her, arbitrary of the officers of civil status and the public prosecutor, in the course of administrative transitions, and the archaic system of the CPAM in medical transitions; these are all daily difficulties, which worsen the health of members of the LGBTQIA + community and increase the risk of suicide.
In a climate of contemplation, the names of the missing persons were projected and taken up in chorus by the demonstrators to honor them. The participants were then invited to contribute to the creation of a collective fresco.
In conclusion, the speaker translated to the demonstrators and passers-by: “Join the associations and collectives around you; create your own support groups; create your media, your visibility, your archives, your stories; nurture your relationships; think of the most isolated people, let’s help each other. Today, we remember our dead and we protect our living, so that none of our names will add to the list in the future”.
