President-elect of Brazil meets today with Brazilian community in Portugal
The meeting will take place at ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, in the city that is the largest constituency outside Brazil, with more than 45 thousand candidates, and where, as in Porto, Lula da Silva registered in the October presidential elections, whether in first or second round, the majority of votes.
In Lisbon, the President-elect of Brazil won the election with 60% of the votes.
Furthermore, in Portugal, Lula da Silva has one of the largest communities of Brazilians residing outside of Brazil and also the largest community of immigrants in the European country.
According to the most recent report by the SEF – Foreigners and Borders Service, from 2021, more than 200,000 Brazilians live in Portugal, currently being the largest immigrant community in Portugal.
The two-day visit to Lisbon, which began on Friday, by the President-elect of Brazil, aims to restore bilateral relations between the two countries, which also involves looking at this community.
On his first day of official visit to Lisbon, Lula da Silva met in Belém with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at mid-afternoon, and then with the Prime Minister, António Costa, with whom he had dinner.
His trip to Portugal comes after his participation in the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27), in Egypt.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 77 years old, was elected on October 30, the date of the second round of the Brazilian presidential elections as President of Brazil, with 50.90% of the votes, defeating the current President, Jair Bolsonaro, supported by the extreme right , which obtained 49.10% of the votes.
Lula da Silva, who has already served two terms between 2003 and 2011, will thus return to the Planalto Palace, in Brasília, after taking office on January 1, 2023.
