La Lettre du Violet: “Hanging the Lenses, Monaco, Rennes… it’s doable! We can do it!”
It’s a special season. The season of all dangers and the season of all hopes. The one where we go back up, full of dreams in the eyes of the supporters and the one, above all, where we have to do everything not to go down again.
Last season, the TFC amazed us. Certainly also because our level was much higher than the teams we faced, and we could develop a game that allowed some defensive largesse, always caught by an extra goal.
Inevitably, this season, facing better defenses, it is more complicated. We fish in front, most of the time. We find it difficult to assert ourselves, and the impression emerges that our various attackers are shy, afraid of the idea of losing the ball by going to the duel, of not having tried the right pass or the right shot. Except that it gives passing sequences that are sometimes certainly very beautiful, and sometimes endless where you just wait for someone to take responsibility. We lack sharpness, and what we offer is ultimately quite stereotyped.
I feel like we have an image of ourselves. The image of a mid-table club. Who will be maintained, perhaps, but who could do much better. Who is fiery, but who is always caught up in his emotions. This was the case for example with the difference in level between the first and second half at La Beaujoire at the start of the season. This is still the case at Roazhon Park, where we take a second but in the famous “five minutes” that control the goal, where we know full well that this is precisely where you need to have extra attention. .
There are many problems in this team (no bench depth, sometimes limited parallels, a cruel lack of realism), but that’s normal! It’s a year of growth, with a limited budget, and investors and a president who seem to pass a clear instruction: first, we stabilize the club financially, and then, we will see to spin a few rounds, just to have a more competitive team, why not to qualify in Europe.
But what is missing for the moment to overcome these problems is above all the panache. The fact of no longer hiding. Basically, a little bit of extra mentality that produces so that we are no longer so predictable in our results. Because how do you explain that we can offer such attractive football in animation, and at the same time stay so much in line? All the matches where we logically have to take points, we do it. All the matches where we must logically lose, we lose. That’s the reality, and that’s the course we must succeed in passing. Hanging Lenses, Monaco, Rennes… it’s doable! We can do it! We are so close all the time…Let’s continue to perform against the teams behind us, and try to adjust for the “big” games. History that we are no longer simply the team of more, the one of which we say “Toulouse too, they have a good game”, but that we can be boring to play for all the big ones. Because mentally too, we are there, in another dynamic.
