Faced with hundreds of competitors, this place in Toulouse reached the final of a European competition

The 11th edition of European Public Space Award delivered its verdict. The Catharijnesingel from Utrecht, the Netherlands, was selected by the jury. Corn Toulouse has more than pulled out of the game.
326 candidates
Created by the Contemporary Cultural Center of Barcelona, this competition brought together no less than 326 candidates from 35 countries. And among the contenders for the final title of this 11th edition: Place Saint-Sernin in Toulouse. One of the lungs of the Pink City got a second wind in 2019 after major work. It is clear that these developments have been noticed, and well beyond France.
Place Saint-Sernin finalist
The town hall of Toulouse indeed indicates that “the development of the place Saint Sernin was chosen among the five finalists of the prestigious Prize for European Public Space awarded on 15 November in Barcelona”.
The project has therefore borne fruit, since “this selection comes reward the important development project led by Toulouse Métropole, which combines the history of a site classified as a World Heritage Site (UNESCO) with the Saint-Sernin basilica, a jewel of Romanesque art, and spaces for walking and greenery in the heart of town”.
“I am very proud to see our beautification project for Place Saint-Sernin among the 5 most beautiful European projects for the development of public space. It perfectly embodies our vision of the city of tomorrow: a city where nature takes back its rights and magnifies our historical heritage, while accepting spaces where the people of Toulouse enjoy being together.”
“A peaceful public space”
The 18,000m² space was considered by the jury as a “peaceful public space, which succeeded both in enhancing the Romanesque basilica and in harmoniously integrating vegetated and convivial spaces open around the building”.
If in Toulouse, the finals are therefore successful, the place Saint-Sernin has, for its part, not been crowned. But this result against more than 300 competitorsa beautiful and indeed a flavor of victory…
