New building for special units of the Federal Police in Brussels
It concerns a building with a provisionally unoccupied area of approximately 4,654 m². Only the outer walls will be preserved, while the inside will be completely rebuilt and renovated. Some outbuildings will also be doubled in height to create larger mezzanines on the floors and provide more flexible spaces. A metal walkway is also being built to connect the property to another building.
There will be interior and exterior insulation, more than 1,600 solar panels will be installed and new windows with a high energy performance and sun-resistant double glazing will be combined. An efficient heating and ventilation system with energy recovery is also provided. The heat and cold production will be ensured by a cascade consisting of a heat pump, a combined heat and power unit, chillers and gas condensing boilers. Ventilation is done by means of double flow systems (variable flow rate) with energy recuperators.
The Witte de Haelen site has a surface area of almost 60,000 m² and consists of twenty buildings housing various services of the Federal Police. This autumn, the Buildings Agency will also start with the installation of new perimeter security for the entire site of the barracks. These works included a light renovation of the reception building, the replacement of the windows and entrance gates of the entire perimeter wall and the renovation of the central path to the forecourt. These works would take just under two years and cost about 3.8 million euros.
