The state announced the burial of the remains of the Corderie, in the Endoume district of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). These remains will therefore be covered by a building. This is a long-standing project that divides the authorities.
In a press release, the Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture ensures that this is a “reversible” action. The goal? “Bury the quarry to pass it on to future generations”, we say.
This project does not fail to come up against the opposition of heritage defenders. Starting with its most famous representative: the animator Stéphane Bern. “Let’s save the Corderie, at the origins of Marseille”, he said on Twitter.
The memory of the Phocaeans
Stéphane Bern had already shown his support for this site in 2017, the year since which the real estate project requiring landfilling has been the subject of lively discussions.
The ancient site of La Corderie dates from the beginning of the Phocaean period in Marseille, in the 5th century BC. The city of Marseille has also been opposed to the landfill project for a long time.
As a reminder, other options had been taken into account. Among them: the installation of a glass roof, which could admire the remains. But this solution was not adopted by the State.
