The president-elect of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, landed in Lisbon this Friday (18th), after participating in the COP27 in Egypt. In addition to meeting with the head of the Portuguese State, the PT member will meet on Saturday with representatives of the large Brazilian community that lives in the country. He was received at the door of the presidential palace in Belém by groups of supporters, but also by Bolsonaristas.

Lula arrived in Lisbon minutes before 1:00 pm (local time), aboard the same private jet that took him to Egypt, where he participated in the COP27, just as the Portuguese football team leaves for the World Cup in Qatar. Due to this coincidence of schedules, he had to leave the airport through a private area, dedicated exclusively to heads of state. An entourage of 10 cars waiting for him and Fernando Haddad.
After having lunch with red shrimp and sea bass with coconut milk and palm oil at the trendy Cícero restaurant – where the exit was surrounded by many Brazilians – Lula went directly to the presidential palace in Belém for a meeting with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
At the door of Belém, groups of Bolsonaristas and Lula supporters demonstrated, sang and exchanged insults. The president-elect obtained in Portugal 65.7% of the votes in the second round.
An agenda in Lisbon, not yet closed and kept very secret for security reasons, ended up adding Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi, who had been to the palace moments before and ended up staying to receive Lula. The Brazilian leader did not hide his joy at meeting the two heads of state and said on social media that it was a “grateful surprise” to see the African president.
“Important partner of Brazil in Europe”
At 20:00 in Lisbon (17:00 in Brasilia), Lula participates in a dinner with the Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa and a restricted list of guests. The press does not have access to the dinner.
In addition to thanking the support for his candidacy, Lula is expected to discuss with both authorities the issues related to the return of negotiations between the European Union and Mercosur, which were paralyzed during the Bolsonaro government. The issue of facilitating visas for Brazilians should also be on the agenda of conversations.
Before disembarking, Lula wrote on his twitter: “Today I am going to Lisbon, where I will meet with the President of Portugal and the Prime Minister. Portugal is a sister country and an important partner of Brazil in Europe. Let’s bring dialogues to the best of our peoples”.
