Wöber threatens the competition: “Real Salzburg” comes after the winter break
Red Bull Salzburg go into the winter break with a six-point lead. Defender Maximilian Wöber still sees room for improvement – and makes people sit up and take notice with a declaration of war.

The winter break is coming for the FC Red Bull Salzburg just right. Although Matthias Jaissle’s team was able to extend their lead over Sturm Graz from two to six points in the past two rounds, the series champions offered light food at best after an exhausting autumn. So did he 1-0 away win at Austria Klagenfurt the hearts of Salzburg’s soccer fans probably don’t necessarily beat faster.
Bundesliga – 16th matchday
“It wasn’t the highest level in terms of play, but we’re very happy with the points,” said Jaissle on the “Sky” microphone after the match. But the German also knows that Salzburg has a lot of room for improvement: “It’s not all going 100 percent yet. That’s completely normal. It’s always a process and a development in such a young team.” All in all, Jaissle was more than satisfied with the way the season has gone so far: “But if you look back on this autumn, then it’s really strong.”
Salzburg “on the rails”
In the league, Salzburg is almost inexorably heading for the tenth championship title in a row, and the Jaissle team is also in the quarter-finals of the ÖFB Cup. And on the international stage, the reigning double winner is in the Europa League after a strong Champions League season against the Roma Continue. “We’re definitely on track,” unsurprisingly defender Maximilian Wöber drew a satisfied conclusion.
But Wöber has also recognized that the lead at the national level has shrunk. Surprisingly, Sturm coped with the extremely tight game plan better than Salzburg, who had to struggle with numerous opportunities in the autumn. In 2023, the series champion will widen the gap again. “We’ll come back even stronger after the winter break,” announced Wöber. “Then you will experience the real Salzburg again.”
After the show of strength in Klagenfurt, Salzburg now have a week off from training before Jaissle asks his team back on the field immediately after the start of the World Cup. Philipp Köhn, Strahinja Pavlovic, Luka Sucic and Noah Okafor, who are traveling with their national teams to the finals in Qatar, will be missing. The approximately one-month training break begins for the championship leader on December 9th.
