Ruth Bader Ginsburg mural torn down at COS | Local News
or mural on the side of a Palmer High School building to celebrate women’s contributions to society has been demolished.
A Indy The reader, who is an environmental activist and voter advocate who wishes to remain anonymous, says she reported the damage to the Boulder Street building twice and nothing was done.
The mural was sponsored by the League of Women Voters as a way to promote women’s voting rights.
The damage appears to be limited to an ink blot on the face of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and a more recent addition of “666,” commonly associated with Satan, to her forehead.
“Disappointed that it remains as it first appeared a few weeks before school started in September,” the reader tells her. Indy via e-mail. She adds that she had hoped that the students themselves would take offense and take up the repair themselves or “insist that it be done”.
Sometime after school started and in the last week, another 666 was added, along with the mustache, she says.
Colorado Springs District 11 Communications Chief Devra Ashby reports that the district is looking for a solution.
“We had to go to the outside vendor that installed the artwork,” she says in an email. “They apparently worked on different means to prevent the complete removal and replacement of the mural, as the damage is extensive.”
The seller told D11 that the remedy is not “a simple reprint and fix the damage.” Rather, the resin used to paint the image is on the vinyl itself. It is not possible to simply slap a new piece over the damage because the damage would still be visible underneath.
Ashby says the retailer hopes to have a solution soon that wouldn’t require replacing the entire mural. Meanwhile, she reports, the D11 facilities team “they did the best they could. I think it looks good, but also now the seller will work on a permanent solution.”
