Berlin. Berlin’s Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) wants to plan more money for the possible repeat election than in the previous election. “At the moment we are planning with 39 million euros,” said the SPD politician of the “Berliner Morgenpost” (Sunday edition). According to their information, the total also includes a partial repetition of the federal election.

According to the Senate Finance Administration, last year’s election cost around 14 million euros. Because there were a lot of problems back then, the September 2021 House of Representatives election could be repeated. The Constitutional Court will decide on November 16th. In addition, there is a partial repetition of the federal election.

Incentives for poll workers
Regarding the repetition of Spranger’s House of Representatives election in the interview: “In the hearing on September 28, the court made a provisional finding on the elections and declared that a complete repetition of the elections is an option. So I’m assuming this scenario for the time being, and that’s how we prepare.”

Interior Senator Spranger and Finance Senator Daniel Wesener (Greens) had already announced that election workers should get more money this time. The so-called refreshment money is to be quadrupled to 240 euros. In addition, more election workers are to be recruited. Last year, around 34,000 helpers were deployed in ballot boxes and postal polling stations in Berlin.
Are you worried that you won’t get any helpers if you don’t show them 240 euros tax-free? “Usually, elections take a year to prepare. This time we would only have 90 days after a corresponding court decision,” Spranger told the “Morgenpost”. “That’s why we have to create such incentives.” When asked how nervous she was that there could be problems again, she said: “Not at all, because we are preparing it well with the state returning officer.”
