“Tectonics and biosphere of the Guaymas basin”, international conference of the University of Siena
From 17 to 19 October the GeoTechnology Center (CGT) of the University of Siena, based in San Giovanni Valdarno, will host the “Guaymas Basin Tectonics and Biosphere IODP Expedition 385 Post-cruise Meeting”, an international meeting of an interdisciplinary group of Coming not only from Italy but also from the United States, European countries and Asia, dedicated to analyzing the results of the research carried out.
During meetings, geochemists and ologists will present the results of deep studies on microbes samples of sediments and marine rocks that have been from the “Expedition 385” of the IODP (Intergated Oceanographic Drilling Program), an international program of global marine coring, of which the Italia is a member of the European Consortium.
The expedition was held in 2019 in the waters of the Gulf of California (Mexico) in the Guaymas Basin, a nascent ocean and a dynamic oceanic environment, where physical, chemical and biological processes are interrelated and interdependent. The destinations of these researches are global and have relevance for the carbon cycle, mass extinctions, the life of microorganisms in extreme environments and the dynamics that control the formation of new oceans.
In the days following the congress, two excursions are planned for the participants: one in the area of Vescovado-Murlo in the province of Siena, to study the rocky evidence of a Jurassic ocean now emerging in this area; and the other in the area of Santa Barbara (San Giovanni Valdarno – Cavriglia) to observe the sedimentary rocks in a recent basin of the northern Apennines.
The program of the initiative is available on the website of the GeoTecnology Center, at the address https://geotecnologie.unisi.it/2022/09/30/2nd-science_pcm-meeting.
