Prague 2 commemorated the Remembrance Day of the Falconry PRAGUE 2 | News
Prague 2 commemorated the Falcon Memorial Day. It falls every year on October 8, i.e. the day on which in 1941 the Gestapo arrested 1,500 Sokol officials from the headquarters, counties and larger units as part of “Operation Sokol”.
“Heydrich assumed at the time that this would break any Sokol resistance and get rid of one of the most important resistance organizations. As it turned out, the opposite was true, and on October 8th he literally signed the death warrant, because a group of absolutely determined opponents who were willing to sacrifice anything, just to avenge their dead brothers. Precisely because in December 1941, an Anthropoid parachute dropped from Great Britain, without these several hundred falcons, that assassination could never have taken place,” said Michal Burian – educator of the Czech Sokolská community.
The events of 1941 were remembered at the Prague 2 town hall not only by Sokol representatives, but also by the city district.
“Prague 2 and Sokol really have a lot in common. Not only the historical context, when Sokol was founded 160 years ago, and soon afterwards Jindřich Fügner and Jaroslav Tyrš contributed to the establishment of the first falconry, i.e. Sokol Pražský. But we actually have three units here, which operates. Sokol Pražský, Sokol Královské Vinohrady and Sokol Vyšehrad. We like to cooperate with them – of course also with the Czech municipality of Sokol, and we share not only the geographical space and historical context, but also common values. And these include respect for freedom, democracy, pride in one’s own The nation and the Falcons are extremely deserving of these things,” said Jaroslav Šolc – Deputy Mayor of Prague 2 Municipal Council.
The Memorial Day of Sokolstva in Prague 2 is also connected with an outdoor panel exhibition on Náměstí Míru. The district also remembers the history of Sokol in its encyclopedia, which is available on the encyklopedie.praha2.cz website.
