Glaciologist Jean-Baptiste Bosson will host a conference on glaciers on Monday October 10, 2022 in Annecy. A free event open to all to discover these “fragile giants”
Monday, October 10, 2022 is held in Annecy, at the MIKADO, a conference on glaciers: “Why and how to protect glaciers? “. Magnifying glasses of the effects of global warming, glaciers play a major role on the planet. Jean-Baptiste Bosson, glaciologist and member of the scientific service of the Conservatory of natural spaces of Haute-Savoie (Asters) will lead the conference. The idea, to raise awareness among as many people as possible: “Without knowing it, without realizing it, glaciers are essential features of our everyday life. They influence the global climate, the sea level, the rivers… and through all these roles they have a major influence. »
The conference will thus explore the worrying evolution of glaciers on Earth in the face of global warming, to then discuss the avenues for reflection and action to protect them.
“If the States applied the Paris agreement, if we managed to push the States, if we pushed the companies to go further or could save an immense quantity of ice on Earth. Conversely, if we don’t do much for the climate, we very quickly show that glaciers can disappear and with cascading consequences that will impact us all. »
This summer of heat wave and drought was particularly harsh for the alpine glaciers. Jean-Baptiste Bosson explains: “It was a major event, the response of the glaciers will be major, we will probably have the fastest melting speeds ever recorded locally. »
“The glaciers become visible the invisible”Ultra-sensitive to the slightest change in thermostat, these ice giants are in fact extremely fragile and at the mercy of global warming: “Barring the heat wave, barring the drought, global warming is almost imperceptible for us. When we say that the temperature has increased by 1.1°C since the industrial era, we do not realize. On the other hand, for the glaciers of the world and the glaciers of the Alps, it will produce the melting of 80% of the volume of 1850.
Accustomed to holding his conferences for 10 years, Jean-Baptiste Bosson noticed an awareness: “These conferences are an opportunity to talk about these issues, they often end with What can we do now? The opportunity to discuss solutions to preserve the environment and for future generations. »
The event is free and accessible for children from 10 years old.
