According to him, Turkey does not have in mind the provoking of an Imian-type hot episode on its own responsibility.
“What the Turks want to do is to force Greece to react to their actions in a way that will legitimize Turkey’s reaction,”
emphasized the director of the Institute of International Relations at the American College of Greece, Mr Konstantinos Philisspeaking to R/S Parapolitika 90.1 Fm and in the show “She and I” with journalists Thanasis Fuskidis and Stella Gadona.
According to him, Turkey has no intention of provoking an Imia-style hot episode on its own responsibility.
So, as he noted, “he is looking for other ways to be able to play with our nerves and psychology and force us into the first mistake. At the moment it has not succeeded and I think this is one of the reasons, the other reason is that Turkey has now begun to consolidate the opinion on its side that Greece acts as an instigator of the Americans and therefore the Americans recommend threats to Turkey and Greece constitute threats to Turkey through American or third-party defense interests.”
Asked if he believes that Turkey has a real strategy of breaking with the West or is just a means of pressure, Mr Filis said that “Erdogan has a strategy of leaving all scenarios open so that he can choose what he judges to be the best given moment. That is to say, lacking a strategy at the moment, he has adopted the view that having all the cards on the table, the treaty can choose the card that it deems serves him best and can also and at the same time be deleted better if he has in his hands, this sometimes his it works sometimes other times it doesn’t. In relation to Greece, that is, it has not come out”.
On the EU’s attitude towards Turkey
On the occasion of the attitude of Brussels towards Turkey, the director of the Institute of International Relations at the American College of Greece, he said it means awareness.
“It means that all the things that we have been saying for so many years are now starting to be realized by others and on a smaller level because at the level of announcements, at least the announcements of the Americans are tougher than the figures of the Europeans and this shows something in turn. But only the Europeans’ reflexes, which are usually very slow, the fact that the answer came on Monday night after the new Turkey-Libya agreement shows that at the moment the lens is on Turkey”. Note to add next:
“Erdogan has achieved this, of course Putin has also achieved this, I mean, I want to say that everything that is happening has to do with what is happening in Ukraine because if we did not have what was happening in Ukraine, the attitude of the Europeans and the Americans might it was different. For us it is good that this is happening because they both understand the analogies that exist in the practices and the rhetoric and the methods, in the “manual” that Russia and Turkey follow and now this is not something that we only discuss we. within the country, it’s something we see being discussed in other Western capitals as well.”
