San Marino. Secretary Belluzzi in Nicosia for the ninth Ministerial Conference of the Environment for Europe
“The mission to Cyprus of the Secretary of State for Education and Culture, University and Scientific Research, Youth Policies, Andrea Belluzzi, began today to take part in Nicosia at the 9th Ministerial Conference of the Environment for the ‘Europe (5-7 October), entitled “Circular economy, sustainable tourism and education for sustainable development”
This was announced in a press release from the Secretariat of State.
“Organized by the Republic of Cyprus with the support of the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe), the summit saw the participation, during this morning’s opening ceremony – in the presence of 70 ministries and 1000 delegates – of the President of the Republic of Cyprus His Excellency Nikos Anastasiadīs and UNECE Executive Secretary Olga Algayerova.
The summit seeks to serve as a platform for communication, cooperation and decision making on critical questions of the environment, education and sustainability.
The Ministers of Education and the Environment decide the initiatives to promote education for sustainable development and will be appointed to adopt the Sustainable Education Region. The framework for the future implementation of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe strategy on education for sustainable development from 2021 to 2030 will also be developed.
In the afternoon Belluzzi attended and spoke at the third High-Level Meeting of the Ministers of Education and the Environment on education for sustainable development.
” Sustainability helps to reflect deeply on the meaning of our doing school and on the connections between school, active and education throughout life and assumes an idea of teaching-learning that has as its primary objective to train the citizen aware and informed, open and participant, actor of sustainable development, peace mediator ‘- said Belluzzi in his speech. ‘It is not a question of revolutionizing teaching, but of placing global problems at the center of the knowledge to be transmitted today, in line with the idea of contextualizing knowledge and teaching. Sustainability is therefore also a strategy aimed at reformulating a civilization project more attentive to ecological values, social justice, solidarity, non-violent resolution of conflicts, interculture and interreligious dialogue ‘- continued the Secretary responsible for delegating education. ” Education for sustainable development therefore as a stimulus to build sustainable cities, sustainable societies, in which participation in decisions gives new meaning to the word democracy, starting with schools that are invited to reflect on their own organization and quality, to become examples concrete forms of sustainable communities, open to dialogue and to the territory ‘- concluded Belluzzi.
On the sidelines of the Conference, the Bell Secretary – accompanied by Paolo Rondelli Director of Cultural Institutes – met, in a very cordial bilateral, SE Ester Vilarrubla Escales, Minister of Education and Higher Education of Andorra. The Memorandum of Understanding on Friendship and General Cooperation was signed on 25 May 2021 between the two Governments, in which the ambitions of cooperation also include the promotion of cooperation in the fields of education, culture, science, society of information, youth and sport. The two ministers shared the desire to start a collaboration both at ministerial and technical level to work together on educational projects and on the Erasmus Plus project.
All delegations will be guests this evening for an official dinner of His Excellency Nikos Anastasiadīs at the Residential Palace of Nocosia.
The participation of Secretary Belluzzi at the Conference will continue tomorrow, during which the bilateral meeting with the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Policies of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency Prodromos Prodromou, is also scheduled ”.
