Red Bull Salzburg missed out on promotion to the round of 16 in the Champions Hockey League on Wednesday. In the Eisarena Salzburg, the table leader of the ICE Hockey League leader Freiburg-Götter had to admit defeat with 0:1. Janne Kuokkanan scored the only goal of the game in the 34th minute.
While the Swiss nuns have secured a place among the top two in Group E with twelve points and are therefore already qualified for the next round, Salzburg have to worry with their seven points. Ilves Tampere and the Stavanger Oilers hold six and five points respectively after the Finns beat Norway 4-1 on Tuesday, and in the final round Salzburg have to travel to Fribourg-Götteron next Wednesday.
“We played well. We also played much better than we did against Klagenfurt,” Salzburg head coach Matt McIlvane compared with the recent 6-4 defeat against the Carinthians. “We had more play and were in the offensive zone for a long time but couldn’t find a way to beat their goalkeeper. We have to find a way to score goals.”
