Reduction of opening hours in shops in Thessaloniki
The measure of reducing the operating hours is being considered by the commercial world in the context of the moves to reduce the increased energy costs, with the first step taking place in Thessaloniki, while the corresponding discussion has also started in Athens.
The possibility of reducing the opening hours of commercial stores is also being considered by the government which monitors market movements, with the issue to be discussed at the meeting to be held today, Wednesday (5/10) by the Minister of Development Adonis Georgiades with market factors.
Based on data cited by the newspaper Ta NEA, the cost her energy rose by an average of 85% over the last year, of those who received bills over the summer, half saw an increase of more than 90% with energy costs accounting – after increases – for more than 36% of turnover.
Executives of the branch of Super Market they estimate that the reduction of their operating hours shops by 2 hours is equivalent to reducing energy consumption for those hours or 5%-7% of total energy costs, arguing that this measure is horizontal “would help a little”.
The president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, Stavros Kafounis, also insists on the horizontal application of the measure, pointing out that the decision must be taken “on the one hand in terms of consumer service and on the other hand with the hours of commercial enterprises, the operating less will have to cope with the same».
The decision for reduced hours in Thessaloniki
The beginning for the reduced opening hours of shops during the afternoon/evening hours, due to the problems created by the energy crisis, the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce (ESTH) proposed
Specifically, it is proposed by Monday, October 10 the opening hours to be configured as follows:
– Monday: 10:00 to 16:00
– Tuesday: 10:00 to 19:00
– Wednesday: 10:00 to 16:00
– Thursday: 10:00 to 19:00
– Friday: 10:00 to 19:00
– Saturday: 10:00 to 16:00.
“Due to the problems created by the energy crisis and the unforeseen difficulties of the coming winter, the decrease in market turnover and the Government’s demand for a reduction in electricity consumption, the Board of Directors of the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce has decided to propose reduced opening hours for the stores . during the afternoon/evening hours” explains in a statement o commercial association of Thessaloniki.
As he recalls “limiting the energy consumption of stores, was a proposal that was also discussed with the MEP and Co-Chair of Intergoup “Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development Mrs. Maria Spyrakis, during the informative event on the topic “Repower EU – An opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises » organized by the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce, as part of its participation in the 86th D.E.Th.».
The reduction of operating hours is not horizontal, says the Athens Chamber of Commerce
On the occasion of the public debate about its possible reduction opening hours of the market, the president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce Stavros Kafouniswhen asked by reporters he said: “The difficult conditions we are experiencing today undoubtedly call for brave interventions. Closing stores earlier could be one such, but the decision should be made on the one hand based on consumer service and on the other hand with the needs of commercial companies, the operating fewer hours they have to cope with.
With these data and because we have discussed this proposal for the week in the Board of Trade of Athens, we consider it necessary if this measure is taken:
1. to be implemented by ministerial decision for all stores of all types, including super-markets, so that we do not face unfair competition again as in the recent past.
2. to be combined with the automatic subsidy of the cost of electricity, given that the reduction of the hours will result in energy saving autonomy.
3. to have a limited time force, as long as the emergency conditions are structured.
4. to give the possibility of flexible work to the salaried workers so that their wages are not reduced.
Once again the country’s business world seems willing to back down, contributing to the country’s critical energy conservation problem. However, it is necessary for the state to support Greek trade in a targeted manner by subsidizing its energy and digital upgrade and freezing any possible increase in insurance contributions and other burdens. It is also the creation of a last brave settlement of all the debts that have accumulated during the last twelve years, with the simultaneous reward of the consistent, so that whoever wants and is able to strengthen his work in the public treasury.».
