Do Moravian Theater Olomouc is coming back the musical Hello, Dolly! In an unusual rendition that transports the audience to Hollywood studios and reveals the relationships of the creators behind the screen. Actress Natálie Tichánková will play the main role of Dolly Levi, and opera singer Jiří Přibyl will play the role of Horác Vandergelder. The premiere takes place on Friday, October 7 at 7:00 p.mfirst replay a day later.
Hello Dolly! Michael Stewart and Jerry Herman are among the world musical classics of the last century. The musical was first performed on Broadway in 1964where he immediately became a hit, but gained wider popularity after his film 1969 adaptation with Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau. In Andrea Hlinková’s directorial concept, viewers will get a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes filming of this Hollywood film. Tomáš Hanák takes care of the musical rehearsal.
The artistic director of the opera and operetta troupe, Veronika Loulová, sees Andrea Hlinková’s direction as bold and fresh. “As in the famous film, in our production Dolly Levi is not a respectable lady in years, but rather a young wily widow, which wraps everyone around its finger. And I hope that it will win over our viewers as well, and become an integral part of the local repertoire,” added Loulová.
Based on Johann Nepomuk Nestroy’s farce, it was created by an American writer and playwright Thornton Wilder in 1938 a play called The Merchant of Yonkers. But it did not meet with positive responses, so he reworked it into the title “The Matchmaker”, which became successful. The play went on to be taken on by librettist Michael Stewart and composer Jerry Herman and reworked into a musical called Hello, Dolly! Superstar among musicals was presented on 16.1.1964 in St. James Theatre. Within months, it was clear that a new musical would happen an absolute world hit. The story of the charming and cunning widow Dolly Levi, who is a well-known matchmaker in the neighborhood, until she finally “chooses” the wealthy old bachelor Horace Vandergelder herself, is an honest life of someone living “here and now”.
“In our concept, they take place on stage two parallel worlds – one real and the other musical. The design of the musical is inspired by the biggest American film studios and Hollywood icons of the time. Behind the scenes, the preparation of the scenes, the relations between the actors and the crew, whose director is the actor Pavel Hekela, offers the audience a slightly different view of the traditional musical.” revealed the form of the Olomouc production by director Andrea Hlinková, who in the past directed Mozart’s operas The Abduction from the Seraglio and Così fan tutte at the Moravian Theater.
Even in terms of music, we can at Hello, Dolly! talk about variety. “The music clearly benefits from Viennese operetta, because here we hear the frequent use of waltz, polka, and march, which is probably why the musical is so popular on European stages as well. In contrast, the theme song grows out of American black tradition. Swing phrasing and improvisation play a vital role here,” introduced the author of the musical staging and conductor Tomáš Hanák.
She will play Dolly Levi Natalia Tichánková from the set of the drama, which he will alternate Petra Zindlerová. He will play the rich country businessman Horace Vandergelder, who wants to find a suitable groom for his niece, but in the process he himself becomes the object of Dolly’s interest. Jiří Přibyl in alternation with Petr Martínek. In addition to the opera and operetta ensembles, the orchestra, choir and ballet of the Moravian Theater Olomouc also participate in the production.
Andrea Hlinková invited the designer Miriam Struhárová, with whom she regularly collaborates, to the production, and who even now created the costumes and the set.
“Dolly” was performed at the Moravian Theater for the first time in 1980 under the direction of Stanislav Regal, then it was not performed until 2006. The director was Gustav Skála at that time.
