Energy transition 2.0: NEOS Salzburg are working on the energy transition 2.0
The Ukraine war not only shows the people in Salzburg the painful dependence on oil and gas.
SALZBURG. Politicians are therefore called upon to deal even more intensively with the issue of how we can use our energy much more efficiently in the future. An energy mix consisting of green energy sources such as solar and wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass and water is important here. In Salzburg, the NEOS as proponents of green energies and want to work towards an energy self-sufficient future for the country.
Successful energy transition vs. bureaucracy deluxe
die NEOS Above all, they see a need to abolish the existing bureaucracy in relation to the approval process for the expansion of new forms of energy. The use of renewable energies has great potential in the federal state and technical know-how is also available. Furthermore, the Spatial Planning Act must be evaluated and adapted in order to ensure that spatial and energy planning are linked. die NEOS parliamentary group leader Liesl Weitgasser sketches an example:
“The aim must be to stop visible undesirable developments as quickly as possible, such as the unused and extensive concrete desert parking spaces in front of the supermarkets, without planning the appropriate installation of solar panels!”
But they also see the framework conditions for innovative solutions that can help with the transition to a sustainable energy system NEOS as imperative. This includes concepts such as power-to-gas, i.e. a form of water electrolysis, but also in general the production of hydrogen or the sustainable use of industrial waste heat.
No green men, but green hydrogen
Green hydrogen, the form that, unlike blue hydrogen, can be obtained without CO2, is already regarded as an indispensable key point for the energy transition worldwide. Due to the Ukraine war and the increase in electricity prices, the price of green hydrogen fell below the price of blue hydrogen for the first time, making it more attractive for investors and companies. However, due to the EU requirements, the industrial emissions directive and the EIA requirements of the state of Salzburg, approvals are again associated with additional bureaucratic hurdles and are associated with them.
Gas independence through biogas plants
In order to expressly reduce dependence on Russian gas and to comply with Austria’s declaration on planned climate neutrality by 2040, the massive expansion of biogas production is necessary. Exactly for this reason call to die NEOS in Salzburg to also pass a “Renewable Gas Law” by the federal government. “In Salzburg there are currently eight biogas plants, one landfill gas plant and 15 sewage gas plants in operation,” explains the NEOS Members of Parliament. The raw material used here is the liquid manure from those farmers who already have a surplus of liquid manure at their disposal, and the biogas plants are technically and economically mature. Only the bureaucratic hurdles would have to be relieved. Exactly for that Liesl Weitgasser (NEOS) also use in the future. She also sees the founding of cooperatives as attractive incentives for a good energy transition. Weitgasser: “The apple farmers in South Tyrol can serve as a role model for such cooperatives, as they already operate such models more than successfully for the processing of their apples.”
