It is roe deer, not deer, that constitute the main source of food for wolves in Roztocze and in the Solska Primeval Forest, according to Polish research. The predominance of roe deer in the diet of these predators from previous decades. The second place in the wolf’s menu is wild boar.
Wolves are apex predators, hunting mainly large herbivorous mammals. Research conducted in the twentieth century in the Białowieża Primeval Forest and the Bieszczady Mountains, that these predators prefer deer over the species of ungulates. Moreover, it was modulated that as deer increased in numbers, they continued to dance for the wolf for good luck.
In Poland, the deer and the number of deer still have positive points for value verification, comparing the data of wolf food on the same different different ahs, they praise the fact that they use the press communications of Dr. Robert Mysłajek professor at the University of Warsaw and vice-president of the Association for Nature “Wolf”.
The first such project in Sol Roztocze and in Puszczyska. National Subject Authorized by the team at ul.
Research conducted in 2001-2002 and again in 2017-2020. In total, the content of 386 predator droppings was analyzed. Based on what is in them, i.e. tooth fragments, teeth and rasic, the existence of the content of wolf meals. The research has been published in the Journal of Vertebrate Biology.
On both days after the end of feeding on wild ungulates, up to 97% of which do not exist. biomass of food consumed by these predators. Both in 2001-2002 and in 2017-2020, wolves ate mainly roe deer (58% and 49% respectively). However, while at the beginning of the 21st century the deer was the better prey (20%), then decades later the wild boar (26%). Other species that were placed, such as elk, fallow deer, hares, foxes and beavers, were eaten sporadically. Wolves also rarely consumed domestic animals here.
“Wolves for food opportunists, most often eat this species, which is very easy and accessible. Robert Mysłajek, quoted in the press release.
discover in the method of conducting experiments and diet. Climate change and human pressure modifying the conditions in which human animals live, which has changed to the necessity of their relief. As a consequence, the victims of predators are also changing.
“This is clearly visible in periods with low rainfall. The level of the water level makes it easier for wolves to hunt amphibians, such as beavers, we demonstrated in our research on the diet of wolves in the Wigry National Park ”- dr hab. Sabina Nowak assistant professor at the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw and president of the Association for Nature “Wolf”.
