Progressive Slovakia goes against Záborská
The Progressive Slovakia Movement (PS) wants to extend the obstruction to Anna Záborská (OĽANO)) restricting women’s access to abortions for six months. The law on assistance to pregnant women was submitted to the parliament at the September session, but it is withdrawing its proposal from the negotiations.
Three days ago, MP Záborská also submitted a proposal on this topic. “We have found order over the years, like Mrs. Záborská, the tool of the day – in the case of withdrawal of the proposal by the proposer, it is valid that the proposal on the same matter may not be included in the parliamentary session for six months. This rule can only be broken at the proposal of the speaker of the parliament, who must praise the majority of the members of parliament.” explained the vice president and office of PS Lucia Plaváková.
According to her, the members of parliament will now propose whether they want restrictions on women’s rights to be discussed on the floor of the parliament.
Plaváková believes that if Anna Záborská was concerned with socioeconomic assistance for women, she would have supported the proposal of the PS. “Now, however, by resubmitting her once-disapproved proposal, she has revealed her true intent, namely that she is and has always been only about restricting women’s access to safe abortions.” Plaváková said and added that she will not allow Slovakia to become another Poland.
According to the movement, Záborská took advantage of the anomaly with the extension of the September session and presented her proposal despite the fact that it is a law on the same subject as the one from the PS workshop. Member of Parliament and PS vice-chairman Tomáš Valášek submitted the proposal of Progressive Slovakia more than a month ago.

“Extremely, in the parliament, they repeatedly try with their proposals to return Slovakia to the past, when women did not have the right to make their own decisions freely. However, we will never give up our fight for human rights and women’s rights, and we will continue to move Slovakia into a modern European country.” said Valášek.
A silent proposal
This time, the proposal is submitted in silence. It contains, as is usual, 48 hours on “thinking about it”respectively, the period of time until the procedure is performed after having the necessary medical documentation.
This time, however, we are talking about the time limit, which is already known in Slovakia, and therefore not about the limit of the originally pushing members of parliament, which went to the second reading on October 6, 2021, and the whole country was thus waiting to see if the “waiting period” would really be extended to required 96 hours. It didn’t happen. It seems that because failure leads to relaxation of the terms of this law and variations of its proposals.
But what the law really regulates are terms such as “artificial abortion” on the “artificial termination of pregnancy”. The question remains how changing the terms themselves will actually help pregnant women decide that they actually want the child they might bring into the world.
What, considering the wording of the proposal of a group of deputies, is trying to help pregnant women, they are not giving up pamphlets. If, in spite of everything, the woman decides for the current so-called artificial termination of pregnancy, the doctor must then give her instructions and other information in written form.
