Green funding for the Nea Krini Fishing Sanctuary with six million
The deputy regional governor of the Metropolitan Unity of Thessaloniki stated that “an end is coming to the suffering of those who are active on the coast”.
Approved the financing of of the Nea Krini Fishing Refuge with an amount over six million euros from “Fisheries and Marine Business Program 2014-2020».
Until now, the boats were docked at the tourist port in Aretsou, where they were stacked one on top of the other or in natural bays unprotected from the weather.
Now the Fishing Refuge, according to the official announcement, will serve and minimize in it 160 of the total 260 active fishing vessels of the seven municipalities of the urban complex of Thessaloniki, including the 18 grams of the average Fishing.
It will satisfy the needs of the largest part of the Metropolitan Unity of Thessaloniki in a huge area from the area of Chalastra to the area of New Passengers.
For the section of the main urban complex of Thessaloniki from Kalochori to the MACEDONIA Airport, it will be the only Fishing Refuge, the announcement emphasizes.
It consists of a main jetty (breakwater), two leeward jetties, two inner quays, adequate and modern land zone with service infrastructure works (water supply, fire protection, electric lighting and waste tanks). The width of the piers is 14 meters and concerns the contrast of the fishing gear on both sides of the surface for the passage and stay of cars and fishermen and a sufficient surface for the passage of vehicles for safety.
The implementation of the project will be carried out by the Directorate of Technical Projects of the Region of Central Macedonia. The Principal of the project will be the municipality of Kalamaria and its operation will be undertaken by the Port Fund of the municipality.
The project to be completed in three years.

In the wider area of the coastline of the Gulf of Thessaloniki, there was no possibility of locating fishing vessel infrastructure due to the existing activities and infrastructure. The coordinated actions of the Region of Central Macedonia and the municipality of Kalamaria, despite the many and different reactions, led to the implementation of the goal. 100% financing of the Nea Krini Fishing Sanctuary”.
The mayor of Kalamaria Mr. Yiannis Dardamanelis stated: “We are implementing an idea that was born forty years ago. The fishing sanctuary of Nea Krini strengthens the existing fishing activity due to tradition and proximity to the sea. Thanks to the excellent cooperation we have had with the Region and the relevant Ministers of Rural Development and Food, the fishermen finally have their own home. In parallel with the construction of the fishing shelter itself, we are already working on ideas for the utilization of the land zone that is being created, which will be the pole of attraction and the driving force for the development of the new Krini and the whole of Kalamaria”.
