Former Antwerp city councilor arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling | Antwerp
AntwerpOn Tuesday morning, the Antwerp Federal Judicial Police carried out nine house searches on behalf of the investigating judge as part of an investigation into the importation of narcotics. Five suspects between the ages of 31 and 52 were arrested, including a former councilor.

Tuesday morning’s action came on the basis of information from the SKY ECC file, in which specialists from the federal police started cracking encrypted messages last year. This led to countless arrests in drug files that had been made.

Former councilor
Tuesday’s searches took place in Essen, Hemiksem, Lille, Lokeren, Mortsel, Schelle and Wilrijk. “Five suspects between the ages of 31 and 52 were arrested for questioning. The investigating judge then decided that it is final, but the judicial process is ongoing.”
Among the five also Jamal S. from Wilrijk, who died in 2018 was incarcerated for almost nine months on suspicion of co-responsibility for the importation of 1.8 tons of cocaine. But his brother Youssef was also visited by the police. He is a municipal councilor in Antwerp and sat between 2001 and 2012 for what was then still sp.a.
