Every fifth job in Austria from a foreign-controlled company in 5 minutes
Foreign-controlled companies generated a third of sales with more than a fifth of those starting in the market economy. The importance of foreign-controlled companies for the Austrian economy leaves their share of 21% at the beginning and 33% of sales in the market economy.
Slight increase compared to previous year
The increase in the number of foreign-controlled companies (+6.7%) compared to 2019 is mainly related to the improved recording of indirectly controlled entities in the statistics. This increase primarily includes smaller units and therefore has little impact on the number of enthusiastic users and sales.
Less turnover and employees
In 2020, foreign-controlled companies achieved 9% lower sales and had 2% fewer employees than in the previous year. This roughly corresponded to the development of the overall economy in Austria this year. The distance with simultaneous control country for units in Austria – measured by the observed numbers – was Germany, from Switzerland, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands and France.
Important destination countries in Austria
In terms of target regions, Germany, the Czech Republic and Hungary continued to be the most important target countries for Austrian companies abroad. Expansions were mainly found in Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, according to figures also in the USA, Switzerland and Turkey.
