The Principality of Monaco offers total free travel on its bus network for two months. A report will be drawn up at the end of the experiment.
It is now possible to travel free of charge in Monaco by bus. For two months, until November 27, the Principality is experimenting with free access to its public transport network consisting of seven lines, two night lines and the port taxi shuttle.
695,000 euros mobilized
This initiative satisfied both residents and workers. “It makes you want to take the bus and you have less desire to take the car”, underlines a resident at the microphone of BFM Nice Côte d’Azur.
“It’s very very good because often people travel short distances and a euro for that is often too expensive,” said another user of the network.
This operation costs 695,000 euros for the Monegasque government, which wishes to put public transport back at the heart of the movement of residents and workers.
“We must not forget that we went through a period of the Covid pandemic. People were afraid of finding themselves in public transport”, underlines Céline Caron-Dagioni, government adviser-minister for equipment, l environment and town planning.
20,000 daily travelers
The Principality also recalls that “the car is not necessary in Monaco intramural”. This experiment, carried out outside peak tourist periods, will make it possible to assess bus attendance for daily use.
An “analysis” will then be carried out according to the results of this free period, indicates Roland de Recchniewski, director of the Compagnie des autobus de Monaco. The extension of such a device will then be studied.
Nearly 20,000 people use public transport every day in the Principality.
