In the morning, the cooperation of the municipality of Pavlos Melas and a certified hazardous materials management company went to the site of the former Hitzou factory.
They moved away this morning the asbestos materials that unknown persons threw in the previous days in the abandoned Hiju factory and next to the Karatassiou school complex where more than 700 students study, in municipality of Pavlos Melas, in western Thessaloniki.
The site of the former factory, which is fenced off, was visited this morning by the cooperation of the municipality of Pavlos Melas and a certified hazardous materials management company.
The incident was denounced by the deputy mayor for Environment of the municipality of Pavlos Melas Sakis Lazaridis, who condemned this action by unusual citizens, who unloaded the dangerous materials inside the former factory.
“In 2018 after a long struggle and mobilizations of the school community and the Municipality of Pavlos. students. Last Thursday, after being informed by the director of the 2nd Polichni High School, it was found that some unconscious people unloaded asbestos slabs inside the abandoned Hitzu factory and right next to the school’s entrance. Unfortunately, once again it is proven that some people do not even consider the safety of the children in front of their own interests”, commented Sakis Lazaridis, the deputy mayor for Environment of the municipality of Pavlos Melas, in a post.
Thessaloniki: They threw asbestos at the former Hitzou which had been cleaned of the dangerous material
It is recalled that the problem was created in 2008, when the irons were looted from the roof of the factory and the asbestos was crushed on the floor, with the result that for ten years it remained piled up with the rubble and garbage next to the Karatassiou school complex.
The legal dispute over the ownership and criminal responsibilities of the pollution of the space was delaying the solution of the problem. Thus, on the initiative of the municipality of Pavlos Melas and the Directorate of Environment and Greenery, a collaboration with the competent Ministry of the Environment, the Green Fund, the responsibilities of the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia Thrace and the Region of Central Macedonia proceeded to clean up the area and remove the dangerous.
After many years of struggle, in 2018 the last tons of asbestos were removed from the installed Hitzou pipe factory, next to a school complex (Kindergarten, Elementary, Middle School, High School) of more than 700 students, in the Karatassiou area, in the Karatassiou municipality. A total of 121 tons of asbestos materials had been removed.
