In Debrecen, the most important stages of the reunification of Germany were also recalled – with video
It has been thirty-two years since the former German Democratic Republic officially merged with the then Federal Republic of Germany. Since then, October 3 is German Unity Day. Hungary played a historically significant role in the creation of Germany as we know it today. The national holiday of the Germans was also celebrated in Debrecen. The reunification of the FRZ and GDR is commemorated with an exhibition and performance in our city.
In August 1989, Hungary opened the Austrian border to East German citizens fleeing to the West. This was one of the important historical antecedents of the reunification of the two German states on October 3, 1990.
German Unity Day will be celebrated this year in Debrecen, in addition to the capital, where Ambassador Julia Gross also participated.
– The relationship between Germany and Hungary dates back to the regime change. We can say that in this great collaboration
Hungary was the first to provide security for East German citizens to cross the border. We can safely say that Hungary knocked out the first stone of the Berlin Wall
– pointed out the ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Budapest.
These historical events provide the basis for today’s good German-Hungarian relations. Mayor László Papp presented at the event: Debrecen was an important player in German unity, and Hungarians know exactly what it means for parts of a nation to be separated by borders.
– Building on these historical foundations, the German contact system is still very important for Debrecen. Given that Debrecen is one of the most important bastions of the German economy in Eastern and Central Europe
said the mayor.
At the ceremony organized on the occasion of the Day of German Unity, the most important milestones of the reunification of Germany were recalled with an exhibition and round-table discussion.
