No Evidence Widely Shared ‘Satellite Image’ Shows Cuban Blackout on September 27th – FakeNews
No evidence that widely shared “satellite image” shows Cuban blackout on September 27th
(Reuters) – Following reports that Cuba experienced a nationwide blackout on Sept. 27 after Hurricane Ian struck, social media users shared a purported satellite image showing the blackout from space. However, Reuters could find no evidence that this image is genuine.
Reuters reports that Cuba’s power grid collapsed late Tuesday, leaving the entire country without power shortly after Hurricane Ian passed.here).
Examples claiming that the image shows a blackout can be found (here) (here) (here).
The image resembles a photograph that appeared in a 2014 article published by Discover Magazine (here). According to the work, it was captured on NASA’s Finnish nuclear power plant satellite in 2012 (here).
This image may have been altered to dim the lighting on the part depicting Cuba – virtually all other elements match. See a side-by-side comparison (here).
Peter H. Jacobs of NASA Earth Communications told Reuters that a photo recently shared on social media “was not an authentic depiction of a Finnish nuclear power plant during a blackout in Cuba” on September 27.
“Neither the Finnish nuclear power plant nor the subsequent NOAA-20 (two satellites carrying the VIIRS instrument that records these blackouts) detected the blackout reported by Cuba on the 27th,” Jacobs told Reuters by email.
JUDGMENT
No evidence. The image appears to be a modified version of the image that was granted to the satellite of the Finnish nuclear power plant years ago. NASA told Reuters that neither the Finnish nuclear power plant nor the subsequent NOAA-20 detected the reported power outage in Cuba on September 27.
