Index – Foreign – The Turks can veto the Swedes and the Finns joining NATO
According to the Free Europeanization, Erdogan gave a speech in the Turkish parliament on Saturday, scientist again threatened to veto the Swedes and Finns joining NATO. The Turkish president emphasized: until the two countries fulfill their earlier commitments –
the in the field of “fighting terrorism” and arms exports – until then nor approve the connection.
The final decision will of course be made by our great parliament
Erdogan said in the speech.
Sweden and Finland submitted their application to join NATO after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war. THE Free Europe also reminded that the accession of the two countries within NATO must be approved by all 30 members. From these
only the Hungarian and Turkish parliaments have to ratify the protocol on the accession of the two countries.
Earlier, the Hungarian government announced that they support the accession, and submit the necessary bill to the parliament but the issue has not been put on the agenda since then (even though the autumn session of the parliament has already started), and there is no news yet on when this issue will come before the Parliament.
In recent weeks, his loudest opponents, the Turks, have made positive statements on this issue, but now, in his speech on Saturday, the Turkish president once again struck a more hard-line tone towards the two countries.
