The Notre-Dame priory takes the qualifier of Deaurata (sea bream) in the 12th century, because of the brilliance of its golden mosaics. Tradition evokes a Roman temple transformed into a Christian church and historical sources attest to the existence of a basilica from the 5th century. A central element of the medieval monastery of the Benedictines, the church was destroyed in 1761. Its gradual reconstruction was completed at the end of the 19th century by the majestic stone facade with colonnade and pediment which dominates the banks of the Garonne. The age of the Marian cult – as evidenced by numerous ex-votos – earned it papal recognition and the title of basilica in 1876. Its Black Madonna has a rich wardrobe used according to liturgical times, renewed in the 20th century. century by great fashion designers. The Grand Orgue has been listed as a Historic Monument for its instrumental part since 1979.
