“Portugal is very illiberal. You will still give a lot to the country” – Observer
Álvaro Beleza, presented as “a socialist assuming that the social elevator is broken”, sat in front of the young people of the Liberal Initiative to admit that “Portugal is very illiberal” and believer that “IL will still give a lot to Portugal, because the country needs to be more liberal”. The statement, coming from the socialist invited to the first liberal youth event, received strong applause from the audience, but there was more to come.
The socialist, who heads SEDES — Association for Economic and Social Development, has no doubt that the social elevator in Portugal works poorly, similar to “elevators from the 1930s that reach the fifth floor, but very slowly and that varies many times”. “Virtually doesn’t have a social elevator”, admits the socialist.
Shortly before Álvaro, Carlos Guimarães Pinto, deputy of the Liberal Initiative, used the example of football to show that in competitive environments it is necessary to have the best and highlighted that this reality does not always exist in Portuguese companies.
