New use for the seat of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The human rights organization Memorial | will settle in Břevnov iRADIO
From Saturday, the Russian human rights organization Memorial can use the residence of the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies near Prague’s Ladronka Park. Markéta Pekarová Adamová from TOP 09 did not want to move from the other end of Prague to Břevnov, so she made the fairy available to a Russian NGO. That way he will be able to continue with his projects. Memorial documents political repression in Russia and defends their victims.

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Martin Churavý accompanies the interior of the villa on an impromptu tour. The white corner two-story villa is from 1932. The space is dominated by an L-shaped hall with armchairs with a metal structure and leather upholstery, as well as a long table for 16 people. Paintings by Jiří Anderle hang above it.

The villa should now be used both for temporary accommodation and for meetings of co-workers of the Memorial Czech Republic association.
“At this point, people from Memorial will be staying here, those who are in Europe working on other projects. They will be able to do work that you cannot do in Russia. And it will also be used to meet people. Because Memorial is not only Russia, it has branches in France, the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany,” explains the organization Štěpán Černoušek.
Cooperation will be mutually beneficial for the Chamber of Deputies, is convinced the Speaker of the Chamber Markéta Pekarová Adamová from TOP 09. “At the moment I don’t need to move to any villa, I’m from Prague. At that moment, of course, the villa is empty, preserved, and of course the maintenance costs something. That’s why we chose conditions that are beneficial for both parties.”

Memorial will pay the Chamber of Deputies 25,000 crowns per month for energy and maintenance of the residence. “When you compare the costs of the Chamber of Deputies, it works out better for the Chamber of Deputies, because the amount will be much lower than it was until now,” continues Pekarová Adamová.
Memorial is dedicated to mapping and uncovering the crimes of the Stalinist regime. But it is also critical of contemporary Russia. Its umbrella organization – International Memorial – was banned by the Russian Supreme Court last December.
That is also why, according to Černouska, it is a great help that there will be a place in Central Europe where researchers can meet. “Meeting people who are already in Europe or coming from Russia would be much more expensive to organize in this way – for hotels, flights. All of that would be much more expensive than if we have facilities here.”
The memorial will rent a villa in Břevnov for the time being for six months. According to the leadership of the Chamber, if the cooperation works, there is no problem in extending the contract.
