Cyclists are not yet allowed to turn right on a red light
Traffic
New road traffic regulations have been in force in Austria since Saturday. It contains new rules for cyclists, for example. Turning right on red for cyclists is in law, but is not yet implemented in Salzburg.
With the entry into force of the amendment to the Road Traffic Act, cyclists will be able to turn right at certain red intersections from Saturday. However, this only applies if a corresponding additional board expressly allows this. The federal states determine at which crossings this possibility is created.
Magistrate is waiting for suggestions from cyclists
In Salzburg, the state government refers to the district authorities. Even in the city of Salzburg, where traditionally a relatively high proportion of trips are made by bike, there are still no corresponding additional signs.
The Salzburg traffic and road law office says they are only in the starting blocks. But the authority does not want to actively look for suitable crossings, a magistrate’s lawyer said through the Austria Press Agency (APA). One waits only for proposals, for example from cyclists, it is said. The municipal councilor Lukas Bernitz from the citizens’ list already made 14 concrete suggestions on Friday. Then, in an investigation with experts and the police, it will be checked whether the suggestions can be implemented. Among other things, this is about not endangering other road users.
